St Johnstone lettering at South Inch Terrace
Deteriorating painted lettering can still be seen above the ground floor bay window of the building at the corner of South Inch Terrace and South Inch Place. On the top line there are the letters 'FARL' and below the letters 'OHNSTONE TORE', perhaps relating to a shop (St Johnstone Stores?). We know that St Johnstone Football Club's original home ground was the Recreation Grounds at Craigie Haugh, located just south of here, where the club played from 1885 until moving to Muirton Park in 1924. The land was leased from Sir Robert Moncrieffe, funded by twenty club members who each contributed one Scottish pound. It hosted the club’s first Scottish Football League match on 19 August 1911, a 4–1 win over Arthurlie. Record attendance was around 12,000 for a match against Clydebank in 1923. You can see the position of the Recreation Ground on the Historical Map of Perth, part of which is shown here together with the same area on Google Maps today.
