This plaque at the corner of Charlotte Street and Blackfriars Street sets out three important dates in the history of Blackfriars Monastery. It was thought to have been founded King Alexander II in 1231. The Church of the Friars Preachers of Blessed Virgin and Saint Dominic at Perth, commonly called “Blackfriars”, was a mendicant friary of the Dominican Order. Mendicant were Christian religious orders who adopted a lifestyle of poverty, traveling, and living in urban areas for purposes of preaching, evangelization, and ministry, especially to the poor. This building at the corner of Kinnoull Street and Mill Street is currently occupied by the Bothy Restaurant. An ornate inscription above the upper floor establishes the date of construction as 1907. This is yet another example of the considerable building taking place in Perth at the turn of the century. The business of William B. Gloag actually began in 1814. (Hunter, T., Perth Weaving and Weavers, 1936) The inscription bears a bunch of grapes confirming that Gloag was a wine merchant, which must reflect on the wealth of the city at that time. Gloags later became famous for Grouse Whisky.
Now the Sandeman public house, the Sandeman Library stands on Kinnoull Street at its corner with Mill Street. In the entrance hall are a series of plaques to commemorate the establishment of the library in 1898. Among them is a plaque dedicated to the founder Archibald Sandeman (1922-1893) Professor of Mathematics at Owens College, Manchester. The Sandeman room in the A.K. Bell library is so named in his memory. A second plaque includes details of benefactors including Andrew Carnegie and Lord Forteviot both of whom gave books, not cash. Pullar House at numbers 35-49 Kinnoull Street and occupying much of Mill Street as well, contains the offices of Perth and Kinross Council. Before conversion in 1999/2000 this building was Pullars of Perth, an extensive dyeworks owned by the Pullar family. A plaque commemorating the Jubilee in 1898 of the service of Sir Robert Pullar, son of the founder of the business. The business was founded in Burt Close in 1824.
